  • Eijkelkamp 06.01.SA Hand Penetrometer can be used for probing to a depth of between 1 and 3 meter.
  • Contain various cones, probing- and extension rods, a measuring instrument with a pressure gauge, tool set, a cone check, a calibration certificate and an instruction manual.
  • The measuring range of the pressure gauge is 10000 kN/m2 (=10000 kPa).
  • The scale range runs from 0 up to 1.0 kPa. The accuracy is +/– 8% in the advised measuring range.
  • The sets have been packed in compact aluminium carrying case.
  • A hand operated auger is included in the set that reaches to a depth of 3 meter, which will enable you to execute research of a soil profile as well, or to penetrate a tougher layer in the soil. The auger is also applied to drill-out the probing hole to avoid adhesion between the probing rods and the shaft wall.
  • Basically the penetrometer consists of a measuring instrument, a probing rod and a cone. The device is pushed perpendicular into the soil by applying equal pressure on both grips. Jerking pushes yields values which are too high and which do not represent the soil.
  • The resistance measured by the cone can be read from the pressure gauge as indicated by the black pointer. The maximum resistance recorded during measurement is indicated by the red dragging pointer.
  • The resistance to penetration (kPa/cm2) of the soil can now be determined by dividing the reading value by the surface of the cone.
  • The value of the resistance to penetration to be expected determines the surface of the cone to be used.
  • For high values the small cone is used and for low values the larger cones are applied. The larger the cone the more accurate the value of the resistance to penetration can be determined.

  • Continuous measurements can be made by recording each layer of the ground profile up to 0.80 m on the chart.
  • Self-recording, i.e. during the measurement the resistance is immediately graphically recorded.
  • The principle of the measurement is based on the compression of a calibrated spring, while at the same time the chart is moved in proportion to the depth by the drive pulley.
  • Fitted with a spirit-level to check if the penetration into the ground by the probe rod and cone is vertical.
  • The penetration should be as close as possible to the vertical, to keep the pressure and friction on the probe rod to the lowest possible levels.

  • Also used for horizontal measurement, e.g. in the walls of profile pits.
  • The principle is based on measuring the highest penetration resistance of a cone over a distance of about 10cm.
  • The penetration resistance is measured by means of a compression spring.
  • A number of cones and compression springs are available.
  • A certain combination of a cone and a compression spring is selected based on the expected penetration resistance.
  • If the expected penetration resistance is high, a cone with a small surface is selected and a compression spring with a large maximum force and visa versa.

  • Measuring range 0.5 MPa.
  • When pushing the instrument into the ground, the pin encounters a force of the ground.
  • The spring is compressed by this force.
  • A slip ring is taken along during this operation, which shows on the scale the maximum force that has been encountered.
  • The scale has been calibrated in such a way that the penetration resistance that has been encountered can be read on it immediately.







Penetrologger

  • Eijkelkamp 06.15 SA Penetrologger is standard set for measurement to a depth of 80 cm.
  • For in situ measurement of the resistance to penetration of the soil. 
  • The cone is screwed on the probing rod, which is connected with a quick coupling to the force sensor on the penetrologger. Now the cone is pushed slowly and regularly into the soil.
  • The depth reference plate, which is on the soil surface, reflects the signals of the ultrasonic sensor, which results in a very accurate depth measurement.
  • The depth reference plate is also used to reflect the signals which are used to control the penetration speed.
  • The measured resistance to penetration and the GPS coordinates are stored in the internal logger of the penetrologger.
  • Depending on the application and the expected resistance to penetration, various cones can be connected to the probing rods.
  • Optional is the possibility of soil moisture measurement with an external soil moisture sensor.
