WindObserver 70

Gill WindObserver 70 – Reliable Wind Measurement for the World’s Harshest Conditions

  • Best ultrasonic wind sensor for freezing conditions
  • WindObserver 70 for AWOS systems
  • Aviation-grade ultrasonic wind sensor

The WindObserver 70 is a rugged, heated, solid-state ultrasonic anemometer designed especially for aviation and extreme environments. It has a wind speed range from 0 to 70 m/s and delivers full 360° wind direction with no dead band, high precision (≈ ±2% at 12 m/s for speed, ±2° for direction), and fine resolution (≈ 0.01 m/s; 1°).  It is built with stainless steel 316 housing, rated IP66 for harsh outdoor exposure, and offers an enhanced anti-icing heating system (≈ 150 W head heating) to ensure operation in icing conditions and down to approx −55 °C.  DC power is required (≈9-30 V) with optional heating (7 A @ 24 VAC or DC), and it supports output formats via RS-422/RS-485 with selectable baud rates, status reporting, and configurable output formats (NMEA, UV, Polar, etc.).  The unit comes with aviation certifications from FAA & CAA for use in reporting surface winds under AWOS systems, minimal maintenance (no moving parts) and optional WMO-style averaging/gust measurement capabilities.

  • Heating power 7A @24VAC or DC (1W/cm2)
  • 0-70m/s wind speed range
  • FAA & CAA accepted* for airport applications
  • Calibration traceable to national standards
  • IP66 rated stainless steel construction
  • Optional base mounts/cable exit
  • 0-360º wind direction range (no dead band)
  • Averaging/gusts to WMO guidelines
  • Aviation Weather Observing Systems
  • Aircraft Landing Systems
  • Remote Meteorological Systems
  • Helicopter Landing Pads
  • Transport Safety
